Christus Victor

Making Christ Known

We are an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) congregation growing in the likeness of Christ by:

Worshiping, praying, and studying God’s word;
Being together with other people; and
Acting in faith through words and deeds both inside and outside our church walls.

A Fond Farewell

To everything - turn, turn, turn.

There is a season - turn, turn, turn

And a time to every purpose under Heaven.

A time to be born, a time to die.

A time to plant, a time to reap

A time to kill, a time to heal.

A time to laugh, a time to weep…………

Dear Members of Christus Victor,

The song “Turn, Turn, Turn,” by Pete Seeger, which is a paraphrase of the verse from Ecclesiastes 3:1, became very special to us as the Nordic Choir at our alma mater, Luther College, sang it often. The message in the song has even more meaning to us now as we have been led to enter a new season of our lives.

We met with Pastor Stefan to share our intention to retire from our music leadership positions at Christus Victor.  We have chosen the occasion of the 39th anniversary of our service to CVLC – January 7, 2018 – as the day for our last worship participation as music leaders.

We could not have served Christus Victor for 39 years as organist and choir director while at the same time, both enjoying full-time careers as music teachers without the assistance of Alice Dabelow.  Alice has worked as Music Coordinator for 25 years as a volunteer!  It is a major job and she has served so willingly with joy.  Thank you, Alice!

It seems only a few years ago that we met to interview for the music position at Christus Victor.  That was November of 1978.  As we close in on 39 years it has been a richly fulfilling, faith-led experience that has changed us forever.  Christus Victor is our family – we have grown up together!  For that reason, you can imagine, this has not been an easy decision for us.  We both love what we do.  It has taken a long time for us to feel at peace about this, and since that sense of peace is present (most of the time), we assume it means God is preparing faithful musician leaders to replace us.

Our music ministry looks forward to a great Fall 2017 season with several musical highlights including our Christmas Festival on December 17 as an evening concert will be a Festival of Lights to be remembered as well.

We have been blessed at Christus Victor with so many talented and dedicated musicians and it continues to be our honor to share this experience with you every week.

In Christs Love,

George and Kathleen Gentes
