October 31, 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and hundreds of observation events are being held all over the globe in 2017 to commemorate this momentous religious revolution that has significantly impacted the history of the world. Between now and November 5, 2017, Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Elk Grove Village, IL, is hosting a “Pictorial Journey Through the Life and Times of Martin Luther” exhibit, courtesy of the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chicago, as part of the #HereIStand initiative.
The German Consul General Herbert Quelle will make a brief presentation about the #HereIStand initiative on Reformation Sunday, October 29, 2017, at 10:15 A.M. in the sanctuary of Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 1045 S. Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village. The #HereIStand posters exhibit is open to the public, free of charge, at Christus Victor Lutheran Church on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., and Wednesdays from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. until November 5.
To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation in October 1517, a consortium of German cultural institutions, backed by the German government, is taking a page from Luther’s playbook. The #HereIStand initiative employs cutting-edge media designed to engage, inspire, and spur reflection. With modern and attractively designed informational graphics, the exhibit delves into the time prior to the Reformation, the biography of Martin Luther, and the context and dynamics of the movement that unfolded after Luther’s posting of his 95 theses in Wittenberg, Germany in 1517. What was actually new about Luther’s theology? What was going on in Wittenberg at that time? How did the new teaching spread?
The Protestant Reformation, which began in 1517, is well documented and was made possible by a media revolution spurred by advances in printing technology. The invention of the printing press allowed for thousands of pamphlets to spread—in the German vernacular —rapidly throughout the land. Luther could “go viral,” so to speak, thanks to the social media of his day. Most innovatively, #HereIStand enables institutions like Christus Victor to create their own displays using attractively designed posters of Reformation history. Five hundred years after Luther, a message will spread with the help of today’s printing technology, sharing, and posting!
Christus Victor Lutheran Church, organized in 1960 in Elk Grove Village, IL, is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther.
