Job Title: Organist/Chancel Choir Accompanist 

Position reports to: Music Director

Employment Status: Part-Time (PAID)

(52 Sundays + multiple Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, Lenten mid-week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, extra Easter services, Christmas Festival, Reformation Concert, choir rehearsals)

Responsibilities

  1. Casts a vision for the worship and music life of the congregation.  Models and communicates this Spirit-led vision.

  2. In terms of administrative planning,

    • Collaborates with Music Director in long-term planning of weekly and special worship and music activities.

    • Manages payroll for organist substitutes.

  3.  In terms of musicianship,

    • Serves as the principal pianist/organist in traditional worship (Sundays, principal festivals, and seasonal midweek worship).

    • Accompanies the choir for service as well as mid-week rehearsals.

    • Participates as needed in wedding and funeral preparations and services (remuneration will be in addition to regular salary).

    • Participates in and encourages music outreach in the community.

    • Accompanies as needed musical performance by guest artists, choirs, etc. during worship.

  4. In terms of the guidance of music staff,

    • Provides music leadership and is a resource and support for the Music Director and music staff members.

  5. In terms of recruitment and the development of musical gifts 

    • Is responsible for recruiting and scheduling substitute organists/keyboard players.

  6. Maintains professional competence by practicing, performing, attending continuing education, teaching workshops and seminars, and reading professional publications.

Qualifications

  1. Is a servant leader with a passion to know and glorify God who has demonstrated the ability to set forth a vision for the worship and music life of a congregation.

  2. Is a trained and experienced church musician with a thorough knowledge of Lutheran theology, a broad understanding of the Lutheran tradition in worship and music, and the current liturgical practices of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, including Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW).

  3. Has experience and demonstrates proficiency in playing piano in a variety of musical styles.

  4. Possesses interpersonal skills, including compassionate leadership, flexibility, and the ability to collaborate with others.

  5. Holds a bachelor’s degree or higher in music, or commensurate experience.

  6. While the organ is desired, a strong pianist with a heart for worship and willingness to build the program will also be strongly considered.
