Bill Fleck was a beloved member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church who left behind a legacy. This 5’2” giant of the faith was dearly loved and impacted many. He believed that “even a dollar could make a difference.” He always had something to say at congregational meetings and was a champion for Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI).

Most people, however, probably knew him as the man who made 10,000 crosses.

Bill Fleck’s hand-made crosses have been handed out at many occasions - baptisms, children’s sermons, high school mission trips, confirmation camps, parades, and more. Bill always carried his crosses in his pocket to be passed out at a moment’s notice. People around the village have been laid to rest with a Bill Fleck cross on their chest. They have been carried along when households have moved across the country or world. These days, Christus Victor youth work together in stations to sand, varnish, and string the already-prepared crosses, to prepare them for their big debut to be brought into the places needing a divine touch.
